“Avoiding danger is no safer in the long run than outright exposure. The fearful are caught as often as the bold.” – Helen Keller

8 Fall Prevention Tips

• Don’t get up quickly after lying down or after eating.
• Don’t walk around with only socks on. Wear proper, non-skid footwear.
• Don’t walk on wet surfaces unassisted.
• Get yearly vision check-ups.
• Make sure canes and walkers are in good condition and are the proper height.
• Make sure trousers, nightgowns and housecoat are not too long to avoid tripping.
• Sit down when putting on hip protectors, underwear, trousers, socks or shoes.
• Stay physically active to maintain strength and mobility.

The Trauma/Stress Cycle

When we experience trauma or an upsetting event it leads to emotional stress. We may then stuff or store emotional attachments to the trauma and upset in our subconscious minds and create beliefs about life and ourselves that may not serve us well. Stuffed emotions and non-serving beliefs create stress. Too much stress equals physical, and mental/emotional symptoms. Physical and mental/emotional health issues may cause more stress and trauma. Gentle processes like emotional wellness and tapping enable you to release emotional attachments to trauma, stress, and non-serving beliefs to create calm, clarity, confidence, and peace.

Feeling Sleepy During the Day?

Untreated obstructive sleep apnea is one of the leading causes of excessive daytime sleepiness. Obstructive sleep apnea is defined as episodes of apneas (not breathing) which last more than 10 seconds and that occur during sleep. These episodes may occur hundreds of times per night and can lead to fragmented sleep. During these events, the individual’s oxygen level can fall to dangerously low levels (hypoxemia) and may result in cardiac arrhythmias (irregular heartbeats), which can at times be fatal. Also, individuals with obstructive sleep apnea are far more prone to heart attacks and strokes.

Diabetic Foot Care

Diabetes can cause a range of related health care issues including foot ulcers and diabetic neuropathy (non-feeling) in the feet. Managing your blood sugar levels can prevent these and other common foot issues, but once they’ve developed, you need to see a qualified podiatrist. When you have diabetes, it’s important to have your feet checked more regularly by a doctor, and by a podiatrist. Foot care and checkups should be performed more regularly for those with diabetes. This helps prevent issues like ulcers, infections, and even gangrene, which can result from restricted blood flow to the feet if left untreated.

You can receive funding to manage your own care in Alberta! The self-managed care program provides resources to directly pay for and manage personal care and home care support services. It is a contract between Alberta Health Services and the client or legal representative. If you live in a community setting and have a healthcare card you could be eligible. You must have assessed unmet health care needs within AHS Provincial Home Care Service Guidelines where you have stable health and predictable care needs and need ongoing personal care and home care support services (e.g., longer-term needs).
