Our project titled “I’m Still Me” will focus on developing and implementing new attitudes and approaches to support people living with dementia, their families, and care partners by creating awareness breaking down barriers, assuaging myths of Dementia and Dementia related stigma through education and conversation. The proposed project will consist of a series of in-person and online community events aimed at creating awareness about dementia, deconstructing mental models, reducing barriers, and fostering more dementia inclusive communities.
We will be hosting 9 in person events across B.C. (Prince George, Kamloops, Kelowna, Nanaimo, Victoria, Burnaby, Surrey, Richmond, Abbotsford) and 45 virtual events across Canada. Call 604-352-4123 or email imstillme@brellasociety.ca for more information and how to sign up.

Foods for Brain Health
The best foods for supporting memory and brain function are those that encourage good blood flow to the brain, and research suggests the following foods may help keep your brain sharp and improve your cognitive function, memory and alertness. 1) Broccoli, cabbage, and dark leafy greens. Enjoy in salads, wraps and stir-fries. 2) Walnuts. Can be added to salads or oatmeal, or just eaten on their own. 3) Berries and cherries. Can be eaten fresh as a snack or added to oatmeal or baked goods. 4) Omega-3 fatty acids. Can be found in seafood, flaxseeds, and fatty fish.
Wellness Game-Changers
During the upcoming winter months, the importance of magnesium and vitamin D becomes particularly evident for maintaining overall health. Magnesium plays a crucial role in supporting our immune system, helping combat seasonal illnesses. It also aids in muscle function, reducing the risk of winter-related injuries and cramps. Vitamin D, often referred to as the “sunshine vitamin,” becomes essential as sunlight exposure dwindles. It helps regulate mood and energy levels, combating the winter blues or Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). Moreover, vitamin D is vital for calcium absorption, ensuring strong bones and teeth when outdoor activities are limited. Ensuring an adequate intake of these nutrients can be a winter wellness game-changer.

Importance of Strong, Mobile Feet
Aside from walking or sport, do you specifically train your feet? There are 26 bones in your feet and all of them require mobility and control. With time/age we lose mobility and strength in our feet yet we rarely hear about ‘training the core’ of your foot. Did you know that the major risk for falling is weak toe flexors? It’s true! Are you able to spread your toes wide and then rise up onto them without holding onto something? If not, you may have mobility and strength issues that can impact your ability to prevent a fall. Want to work on your feet? We can help! DianeLeePhysio.com | Diane Lee & Associates – Consultants in Physiotherapy and more!
Exploring Creative Passions
Embracing creativity unlocks numerous benefits. It allows us to reconnect with past joys and explore fresh passions, fostering fulfillment. Creative activities, from art to games, offer mental and emotional rewards, granting purpose, combating isolation, and sharpening cognitive abilities. Moreover, creative pursuits foster connections, as you lead to participation in group activities. Such interactions alleviate loneliness and facilitate meaningful friendships. Age should never deter us from exploring our creative side as it nourishes our mental, emotional, and social well-being. Whether reviving old interests or embarking on new adventures, creative passions in your older years can be a gateway to newfound fulfillment.
Breast Cancer Awareness Month
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, dedicated to driving awareness about prevention, detection, diagnosis, and treatment options. Breast cancer is the most diagnosed cancer in women globally, and within Canada, it is the third most-commonly diagnosed cancer, accounting for 25% of all cancer diagnoses in females. As you get older, your risk of developing breast cancer increases, and women between the ages of 50 and 69 years of age are more likely to develop it. The good news is, when detected early, the chances of survival increase. Regular screening increases the chances of detecting certain cancers early, before cancer has a chance to spread.
