Music and Dementia

The effects of dementia are devastating to individuals and their families. Researchers are keen to find ways to ease its symptoms and restore abilities and memory. Studies on music and dementia have shown promising findings. Did you know that the area of the brain associated with musical memory tends to be least affected by dementia? Music therapy may help reduce cognitive decline while improving the memory of people with dementia. In one study, test subjects performed better on memory tests when they listened to music. It has also been found that the emotional content of music can bring back emotional memories.

Celebrate Ching Ming

As spring unfolds, it brings with it the Ching Ming festival, a revered time for honouring ancestors and reflecting on the cycle of life. This tradition, known as Tomb-Sweeping Day, connects us deeply with our cultural heritage, encouraging reverence and remembrance. At Bakerview Cemetery, we celebrate this connection by incorporating wellness activities, emphasizing the harmony between physical health and spiritual well-being. In the tranquil beauty of our grounds, we invite you to our Ching Ming Open House, a day dedicated to paying homage to those who have shaped us, through respect, remembrance, and wellness-oriented learning. Join us in this meaningful observance and community gathering.

Allergy Prevention Strategies

As spring brings pollen allergies, symptoms like runny noses and itchy eyes abound. For severe reactions, such as insect bites, avoiding allergens may be challenging. To pre-empt allergies, start antihistamines before exposure. Combining them with decongestants may boost effectiveness. Corticosteroid nasal sprays, alone or with antihistamines, offer relief but need regular use. Specific products like eye drops and nasal rinses target symptom relief and allergen reduction. Consult our pharmacists for personalized advice; they can now prescribe certain medications during minor ailment assessments, including for insect bites.

Nutrition and Arthritis

Arthritis, an inflammatory joint disease with acute crises and dormant periods, brings fatigue, joint stiffness, and pain. Focusing on your diet can help manage symptoms: Control Weight: Excess weight strains joints; maintain a healthy weight through balanced meals. Embrace Omega-3: Fish with omega-3 fatty acids may ease inflammation. Sardines, herring, and mackerel are rich sources, or consider supplements. Balanced Diet: Contact a nutritionist for a personalized plan, adjusting during crises if needed. Seek Assistance: Arthritis’s impact on daily activities may necessitate help, enhancing overall quality of life. Consult with one of our pharmacists to explore how we can assist you.

Revitalizing Hair with PRP

Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) hair therapy is an innovative treatment aimed at stimulating hair growth and reducing hair loss. This non-surgical procedure involves drawing a small amount of your blood, processing it to enrich the platelets, and then injecting this platelet-rich plasma into your scalp. Platelets are known for their healing properties and their ability to promote cell growth and regeneration. By concentrating these elements and applying them to the scalp, PRP therapy can enhance hair follicle health, potentially leading to thicker, fuller hair. The treatment is relatively quick, requires minimal downtime, and is considered safe with a low risk of adverse effects. It’s essential for patients to consult with a qualified healthcare provider to determine if PRP hair therapy is suitable for their specific condition and to understand the expected outcomes and any potential risks involved.

Honouring Our Loved Ones

In the process of grief, deciding what to do with a loved one’s cremated remains can be burdensome. Keeping a loved one’s remains at home, though comforting, can be an emotional challenge and become a reminder of loss. Finding a final resting place is crucial for providing relief and closure. The transition from home to a peaceful site can transform the memory from loss to honour.
