Volunteers Always Needed!

The strength of the Comox Valley Senior Support Society comes from our amazing volunteers. If you would like to visit with a lonely or isolated senior, or assist someone with accessing services in the community, or if you have another strength to offer, please contact us to learn more about providing support in your community. Beginning in September, volunteer training sessions will be done monthly so there will be only minimal waiting before you can begin! Volunteers are provided with monthly support meetings and regular education sessions.

Summer Heat

As the weather gets hotter through the summer it’s important to know the signs of heat stroke and excessive heat. This can include:
• Muscle cramps
• Heavy sweating
• Skin rash
• Light-headedness and fainting
• Nausea and/or vomiting
• Hands and feet swelling
• Seizures, hallucinations and unconsciousness

If the symptoms are severe, call 911 and try to cool yourself (or the person experiencing heat stroke) with water and a fan.
Here are some tips to protect yourself from summer heat:
• Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water throughout the day, even if you don’t feel thirsty. Avoid sugary drinks and excessive caffeine, as they can dehydrate you.
• Dress Appropriately: Wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing in light colors to reflect sunlight and heat.
• Stay Indoors During Peak Heat: If possible, limit outdoor activities to the early morning or evening when temperatures are cooler.
• Use Sunscreen: Apply sunscreen with a high SPF to protect your skin from harmful UV rays, even on cloudy days.
• Cooling Measures: Use fans, air conditioning, or take cool showers or baths to lower your body temperature.
• Protect Your Eyes: Wear sunglasses that block UVA and UVB rays to protect your eyes from sun damage.
• Limit Strenuous Activities: Avoid strenuous activities during the hottest part of the day. If you must exercise outdoors, do so in the early morning or late evening when it’s cooler.
• Check on Vulnerable Individuals: Keep an eye on elderly family members, neighbors, and pets who may be more susceptible to heat-related illnesses.
• Stay Informed: Be aware of heat advisories and warnings in your area. Take necessary precautions if you need to be outside.
By following these tips, you can enjoy the summer while keeping yourself safe and healthy in the heat.

Beat the Summer Heat

Summer is here, bringing the heat! Stay safe by preventing these heat-related issues: 1) Dehydration – drink more water and electrolytes to avoid weakness, headache, and fainting. 2) Heat stroke – cool down with shade/AC and water, seek medical help for body temperatures of 40°C or higher, fast pulse, and hot, dry skin. 3) Heat exhaustion – rest in shade/AC and drink fluids to counteract heavy sweating, weakness, and nausea. 4) Heat syncope – lie down with feet up and drink water if you faint due to high temperatures. Senior residences offer air-conditioned spaces, safe outdoor areas, and social activities, enhancing comfort and well-being.
