Chemicals in Drinking Water

Chlorine is essentially bleach. And what comes out of most municipally delivered faucets is quite actually, a mild bleach solution. Is it healthy to drink bleach? Does your body require any certain amount of chlorine to remain healthy? Feel free to consult a physician on that somewhat rhetorical question.

The contamination of water is directly related to the degree of contamination of our environment. Rainwater flushes airborne pollution from the skies, and then washes over the land before running into the, rivers, aquifers, and lakes that supply our drinking water. Liquid chlorine is mixed into drinking water and swimming pools to destroy bacteria. The good news is, you don’t have to drink it anymore. The most practical and efficient method for removing chlorine, chlorine by-products, and taste and odor problems, is to filter it with granular activated carbon (GAC) or other suitable chemical-removing filter media, such as KDF.

A Solution for Cellulite

When we fall from balance, the cells in the body are at war with gravity. The tissue has to find a way to keep us upright, and it does this by gripping on to the bony surfaces to create stability. This is what creates the appearance of cellulite. Fascia curls around the bones in our legs, gripping the bone and curling more and more as the fascia ‘freezes’ and increases in size. The ‘frozen’ fascia pulls the skin down toward the bone in the leg. This causes a ‘dimpling’ of the skin on the surface, creating cellulite.

The solution to cellulite is to melt the fascia in the legs. To do this we use the block with block therapy and diaphragmatic breathing. As we melt through the frozen fascia in the leg, it releases the pressure on the skin, therefore reversing the ‘dimpling’. The skin becomes more healthy and vibrant, looking younger and the cellulite begins to vanish.

Low Back Pain?

Whether it be playing hockey or watching our Jets for hours on the couch; the typical ‘hockey back pain’ is usually a hip flexor muscle strain; the infamous, anatomical, Psoas muscle group. (Pronounced: So-as). The Psoas is a hip flexor located deep in the lower abdomen/pelvis attaching the femur to the pelvis and lumbar spine. The lumbosacral nerve plexus runs through it. Prolonged sitting, repetitive flexed or bent over activity, and a lack of exercise can shorten the Psoas. When we stand after sitting for a while, the shortened Psoas pulls the lumbar spine forward into increased lordosis or that inward curve. A stiff, achy or painful low back & sciatic pain is often a result. Slow and purposeful stretching by the dynamic lunge can help, but know your Biomechanics at work, home and play.

Pet Health: Canicross

Canicross is the sport of running with your dog. Let’s face it. When it comes to running, six legs are better than two. Running with your dog is a great way to enjoy the world, get fit, and bond with your dog. However, before you get started here are some tips.

Tip #1 – You want to check with your family doctor and your dog’s veterinarian to make sure you and your dog have no restrictions when it comes to running.

Tip #2 – Making sure you have the proper gear such as a running harness for your dog, a bungee tether that connects you and your dog and a thick belt that lessens the load on your lower back. Having proper clothing and shoes are excellent tools for preventing injuries.

Tip #3 – Do not be a weekend warrior. Start slow, be consistent and build up to a fitness goal for both human and dog.

Shoulder Pain?

What do you do when your anti-inflammatories don’t take care of your shoulder pain?  Often, a diagnosis such as “tendonitis” is the source of your symptoms however it is rarely the cause.  So if your shoulder pain returns when going off the meds, possibly looking at muscle imbalances around your shoulder blade or your overall mid-back mobility might be the key to getting your rotator cuff tendons to be less inflamed.

With my patients, I often use the analogy of brand new tires on your vehicle.  If you don’t get the wheel alignment checked, you will always wear out the front left tire.  Our Physiotherapist, Athletic Therapist and Sport Medicine Doctor can help address your alignment so you don’t wear out your front left wheel!

Struggling with Diabetes?

Many people living with diabetes are trying to self-manage with inadequate knowledge and skills. The best approach would be to meet with a certified diabetes education consultant. Evidence has shown that one-on-one diabetes education lowers blood pressure, blood sugar, cholesterol and weight, delays or avoids complications, increases confidence to self-manage and minimizes emotional stress.

With the right help, those with diabetes can lower their risk of heart attack, stroke, and damage to the eyes, kidneys and nerves. Professionals can help develop problem solving and decision making skills, and teach you about different foods that affect your blood sugar and ultimately your lifestyle. A certified diabetes consultant can also inform you on medications and will help you learn how to take care of your feet and eyes. You will also have access to trusted resource for help and ongoing support to keep you motivated. Health is worth living for!
