Core Strengthening Success

Many popular workouts that aim to strengthen your arms, legs, and abs give short shrift to many of the muscles that form your body’s core (the group of muscles that form the sturdy central link connecting your upper and lower body). Strong core muscles are essential to improving performance in almost any sport — and are the secret to sidestepping debilitating back pain.

Extremely sore muscles a day or two after a core workout means you probably overdid it and might need to dial down your workout a bit. Next time, try to finish just one full set of each exercise in the workout. You might also do fewer repetitions (reps) of the exercises you find especially hard. Once you can do reps without much soreness, build strength by adding one more rep of the harder exercises in each session until you’re doing the full number of reps comfortably. Then try adding a second set.

Delayed-onset muscle soreness is a normal response to working your muscles. Usually, it peaks 24 to 48 hours after a workout before gradually easing, then disappearing entirely in another day or so. But if you experience sudden, sharp, or long-lasting pain, check with yourPhysio; include https://passs.co/-toml9-GJo8 in your iPhone Passbook.

Work Stress – A real solution to a huge problem

Stress is a problem in the workforce, and part of the reason is the posture we assume while working at a desk. The seated position creates compression in the pelvis and the computer posture creates a collapse of the upper body. This dramatically affects the way we breathe, starving the body of the oxygen, the most vital nutrient our cells need to thrive.

The Block Therapy Chair Class is an amazing solution to stress. This 3-day, in office class will give real, transformative results and provide a lifelong approach to health and wellbeing. The results are not only for the individual’s health, but will translate to more efficient, productive employees. The common issue’s related to stress and immobility will be addressed and simple, proactive solutions that can be done in your chair will be the focus.

Book Club: The Happiness Project, by Gretchen Rubin

Gretchen Rubin had an epiphany one rainy afternoon in the unlikeliest of places: a city bus. “The days are long, but the years are short,” she realized. “Time is passing, and I’m not focusing enough on the things that really matter.” In that moment, she decided to dedicate a year to her happiness project. In this lively and compelling account of that year, Rubin carves out her place alongside the authors of bestselling memoirs such as Julie and Julia and Eat, Pray, Love.

With humour and insight, she chronicles her adventures during the twelve months she spent test-driving the wisdom of the ages, current scientific research, and lessons from popular culture about how to be happier. Written with charm and wit, The Happiness Project is illuminating yet entertaining, thought-provoking yet compulsively readable.

Gretchen Rubin’s passion for her subject jumps off the page, and reading just a few chapters of this book will inspire you to start your own happiness project.

Getting Well Today and Staying Well in the 21st Century

Ask a dozen people or more what “wellness” means to them and you will get as many different answers related to alternative therapies, natural medicines, fitness, nutrition, and even spirituality. For Rick Thiessen, ‘wellness’ means all of these in addition to no small amount of pride in being behind one of the most successful health and wellness expos in Canada for the last twenty years. This annual consumer show features approximately 100 companies with thousands of products and services that are designed to promote a healthier and more fulfilling lifestyle as well as enhance or improve a person’s quality of life.

The Wellness Expo is all about choice: treatments, products and more. People should have a choice but they don’t even know what’s out there. Unfortunately when consumers are looking for answers, it’s usually under duress. As a visitor to this event, the Wellness Expo offers people to try products and services in a safe and less costly environment.

The 21 annual Winnipeg Wellness Expo comes to the RBC Convention Centre, February 20 – 22, 2015. Admission is $10 for an all-day pass that includes access to the trade show, displays and demonstrations as well as all of our seminars.

Back Problems?

If your back is bothering you consistently, at work, at home in recreation…you may be moving wrong, or just not moving enough!

Four great strategies to ‘get up, and get moving’ are:

  • Do easy stretches at work;  Get out of your chair, do some simple lunges in place; keeping the back straight and the movement always comfortable.
  • Try a yoga or Pilate’s class; get educated as to what you can do on your own. Learn the proper technique as to prevent injury and strengthen your core.
  • Lastly, dust off those weights, grab some walking/ski poles and get out in the snow for a hike; the uneven ground will challenge you and get you moving!

Why Do Our Backs Fail?

This is a question often asked in our clinic and we commonly have two answers for our patients. Backs become injured when a high load (weight) is imposed on our back that exceeds its ability to deal with the single time lift. This would be the “push the car out of rut” example.

The other is repetitive stressors to our spine that have very light loads (weight) with little to no recovery between repetitions that cause the back to fail over time. This example being a worker who works at a pen factory and has to pick up a pen every 20 seconds to put it back on the conveyor belt. Both are equally harmful to your spine!

The fix? Strong core muscles and how fast those muscles respond!
