Did You Know?

For every person experiencing a substance abuse problem, on average, at least six others are affected – partners, spouses, children, parents, friends, employers, and co-workers. Although family members, friends, employers and co-workers are often in the best position to intervene, on average, significant others do not seek direct help for their loved ones substance abuse or addiction problem for at least nine years. Those affected by a significant other’s substance abuse, may themselves experience significant physical, emotional, social and spiritual stressors. Medications & Your DNA

Did you know that your unique genetic profile can determine how your body processes certain medications? For some people, they may metabolize drugs too quickly and as a result, get little or no benefit from a particular medication. For other people, they may metabolize medications too slowly and as a result, have an increased risk of side effects. Genetic testing can help to personalize your treatment by using genetic information to customize drug therapy and the doses that work best for you. As your DNA does not change, the testing only needs to be performed one time.

Three Tips to Boost Focus

1. Practice Mindful Journaling: set aside time every day to write down how you are feeling right now, sensations you feel, and why you are feeling the way you are. Do this without judgement and be kind to yourself. 2. Practice Gratitude: every day tell a family member or colleague three things you are grateful for – your overall positivity will skyrocket after one month. 3. Try Uni-tasking. That is, focus only on one thing at a time. Want more tips? Check out our full Guide to Mindfulness at Work at wellnessworkscanada.ca.

Dentures and Dry Mouth

Dry mouth is a condition that involves the salivary glands not producing enough saliva to adequately keep the mouth moistened. This lack of saliva can alter the fit and comfort of dentures, since saliva helps dentures retain their suction and stay in place and also has a lubricating effect that keeps dentures from rubbing on the gums and creating sores. Those who take certain medications, are older, and use tobacco and alcohol are more susceptible to dry mouth. If you’re experiencing dry mouth symptoms as a denture-wearer, contact your denturist to discuss your options.

Acupuncture for Migraine Headaches

Migraine headaches can greatly impact people’s lives, and many people who suffer with migraine headaches look for relief using prescription medication. Studies have shown that acupuncture may be a safe and side-effect-free alternative or complement to prescription medication, as it can help to alleviate migraine symptoms, both in severity and frequency, as well as potentially prevent migraines. It does so by increasing blood circulation, releasing pain-relieving chemicals, and relaxing the muscles. If the root of your migraines is active myofascial trigger points, it’s a good idea to find a certified Traditional Chinese Medicine pain management practitioner who can help.
