Japanese Thermal Therapy for Joints

Arthritis is that moment when you are chasing your grandchild, and you stop because that pain goes off again in your knee. As we age, our joints naturally begin to age too. Ganban-yoku, a Japanese natural thermal therapy, is recommended for arthritis because of its unique ability to stimulate our body’s healing mechanisms through non-invasive heat. Stone beds warm your body evenly, promoting healing from the inside out, while maintaining gentle lower temperatures. This is what leads to increased blood circulation for your body to heal, especially when repairing inflamed joints. Mieko Morisawa, Pocca Poca Spa, PoccaPocaSpa.com

Physio for Headaches and Migraines

Many of us deal with headaches and migraines on a frequent basis. Cervicogenic and tension types respond very well to physiotherapy, decreasing the frequency and intensity, and possibly resolving them completely. This includes manual therapy, exercise, and intramuscular trigger point dry needling. A physiotherapy assessment can help you determine the type of headache you may be dealing with, as well as start you on the road to recovery with treatment, home exercises, and ergonomic or posture changes that can help in their resolution.

Health Benefits of Collagen

As we age, the amount of collagen in our body decreases. By age 25, collagen levels decrease at a rate of 1.5% a year. By age 40, collagen is depleted faster than it is produced! And by age 60, over half of the body’s collagen has been depleted. At this stage, we are left with achy joints, sore muscles, wrinkly skin, and brittle bones. Collagen supplements repair joints and connective tissue; treat osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and osteoporosis; improve hair quality, skin elasticity, and sleep; shorten recovery after exercise; calm anxiety; help heal digestive problems; and can even help you lose weight! Dinacharya and Oral Health

Ayurveda prescribes some daily rituals known as dinacharya, which help to establish balance, health, and harmony in our body. Oral hygiene is important for digestive, heart, and brain health. Gandusha (oil pulling) and tongue scraping are important rituals of dinacharya. Gandusha should be done first thing in the morning with 1 tablespoon of sesame oil swished around the mouth for five minutes. If you wish to do it longer, change the oil. Always spit out the oil in the trash bin. Follow gandusha with brushing teeth and tongue scraping.

Trust your Gut

Your immune system works hard to protect you from injury, illness, and disease. This process usually involves inflammation, a natural response to stress, tissue damage, and harmful stimuli like viruses, bacteria, and toxins. Inflammation functions similarly to an engine warning light, alerting you to the presence of a problem through symptoms such as heat, pain, redness, swelling, and/or loss of function. 85% of the immune system is located in our gut. An anti-inflammatory diet rich in vitamins A, C, and E and the mineral selenium provides your gut with the ingredients it needs to bolster immunity and achieve optimal mental and physical health. Be Thankful Every Day!

October is the month for Thanksgiving. If you celebrate this day, you may take the time to be grateful for the family, friends, and food that you are able to enjoy.
Gratitude is:
• affirmation of goodness in life;
• thinking and believing that we deserve the best life has to offer; and
• acknowledging, appreciating, and taking care of what is valuable and meaningful to oneself.
Gratitude decreases stress, depression, and anxiety. It promotes happiness and well-being. So, be thankful. Practice gratitude every day! Tracy Sparham, BSW, RSW; Sparham Counselling Services, SheaTreeWellness.com
