Importance of Vitamin D

With the darker winter months upon us, the sun’s rays are not strong enough for our bodies to produce sufficient Vitamin D. This is why Osteoporosis Canada recommends that most Canadian adults should take a daily vitamin D supplement. Vitamin D plays an essential role in bone health by facilitating the absorption of calcium. It also helps maintain muscles and reduce the risk of fractures caused by falls. Some studies have suggested that it may reduce the risk of certain diseases. Talk with one of our pharmacists about recommended doses or to learn more about other supplements, vitamins and minerals.

Acupuncture for Less Anxiety

Many studies involving hundreds of patients have shown evidence that acupuncture can help treat anxiety and can have similar effects as talk therapy. Acupuncture can help the body relax in a variety of ways, including 1) prompting the parasympathetic nervous system to release signals for relaxation; 2) improving the heart rate variability, which helps the body cope with stress; 3) calming the hypothalamus, which releases neurochemicals when we are under stress; and 4) helping with the flow of endorphins, the body’s own “feel good” chemicals. Acupuncture can be considered as an effective alternative to traditional pharmacological and psychological treatments.

A New Year Awaits New Possibilities

When I listen to my intuition and emotions noticing all the ways I have failed to do so in the past, it serves to align my inner compass, welcoming in authenticity and flow.
When I value my time, energy and self-worth, I release the people, situations and experiences that have failed to respect the boundaries I set and connect in with those that do, I respect myself.
When I put my values into action, I live and operate from my highest vision. Feeding my strengths and talents, infusing them into my creativity. Honoring my integrity and self-expression.
When I learn to make peace with my past, I release the pain and grief of what can’t be. Welcoming self-compassion and acceptance for what can be, I renew my life.

Q. What causes floaters in the eye?
A. Floaters usually happen because of normal changes in your eyes. As you age, tiny strands of your vitreous (the gel-like fluid that fills your eye) stick together and cast shadows on your retina. Those shadows appear as floaters. Sometimes new floaters can be a sign of a retinal tear or detachment — when the retina gets torn from its normal position at the back of the eye. Symptoms can include: a lot of new floaters that appear suddenly, sometimes with flashes of light and a dark shadow or blurry area in your vision. Retinal detachment can be an emergency, so see your eye doctor right away.

Dentures and TMJ Disorders

TMJ Disorders, or Temporomandibular Joint Disorders, can sometimes be caused by too much space between your upper and lower teeth. When your dentures no longer fit properly because of ridge resorption and worn down tooth anatomy, this can lead to a decreased vertical dimension, which in turn can cause TMJ pain. Symptoms like headaches, popping in the jaw, pain in the jaw, neck pain, dizziness, pain in the ears, ringing in your ears, or even hearing loss could occur. If you experience any of these symptoms, talk with your denturist to see how they can help with this issue. Make sure to get your dentures checked regularly to prevent further problems.

What is Holistic Dentistry?

In holistic dentistry, the mouth is viewed as an integral part of the digestive tract, which is crucial to overall health. A holistic dentistry practitioner takes time to educate patients on key nutrients for systemic and emotional health, the importance of restful oxygenated sleep and proper digestion, and the dangers of infected teeth and gum inflammation. Specialized technology is used in holistic dentistry, such as PRF, ozone, lasers and CBCT imaging, to properly diagnose and manage disease. In addition, only biocompatible materials are used, as opposed to ‘tolerable’ ones such as BPA-free composites, zirconia, and no amalgam silver fillings.
