Dentures and TMJ Disorders

TMJ Disorders, or Temporomandibular Joint Disorders, can sometimes be caused by a misaligned bite. When your dentures no longer fit properly because of ridge resorption and worn down tooth anatomy, this can lead to an incorrect bite, which in turn can cause TMJ pain. Symptoms like headaches, popping in the jaw, difficulty moving the jaw, pain in the jaw, neck pain, dizziness, pain in the ears, ringing in your ears, or even hearing loss could occur. If you experience these symptoms, talk with your denturist to see how they can help with this issue. Make sure to get your dentures checked regularly to prevent further problems.

Commonly mistaken with flexibility, which is the ability of your muscles to lengthen passively through a range of motion. Mobility is an important aspect in health and fitness although commonly put aside, when included in your daily life, can be rewarding!

Ask Dr Tyler Anderson OD

Q: Is it worth wearing sunglasses if my lens implants (from cataract surgery) have UV protection built in?
A: In short, yes. The protection from ultraviolet light in lens implants is meant to protect the interior of the eye (mainly the retina) from sun damage. However, these implants cannot protect the more exterior parts of the eye, like the cornea, the conjunctiva, and the skin on the eyelids. Many types of prescription lenses for glasses already have some UV or blue light protection, even if they are not sunglasses. This may be worth checking during your next eye exam.
