Which Pet Collar is Best?

There are several types of collars and harnesses out there. A good rule to remember is “how would you feel if it were used on you?” Standard, Choke, Prong and Electrified Collars – only attach a leash if you are an expert in each one’s application. They can cause serious physical or mental harm to your pet. Head Collar/Snout Harness – great for dogs that do not make sudden dashes to the end of their leash. They can cause neck/spine injuries. Off-neck Harnesses – come in chest, back or combination attaching rings. These are all good for most dogs that pull when fit properly.

Recognizing Oral Cancer Symptoms

Each year, 3,200 Canadians are diagnosed with oral cancer. When caught early, oral cancer can be effectively treated. Denturists are qualified to recognize the symptoms associated with oral cancer, as well as other oral health issues. In addition to getting regular checkups, familiarize yourself with symptoms, including: sores, particularly those that bleed or won’t heal; growths, lumps or thickened skin; trouble swallowing or chewing; pain in the tongue, jaw or throat; loose teeth; or poorly fitting dentures. If you experience one or more of these symptoms, be sure to schedule a visit with your denturist as soon as possible.

Hearing Loss & Depression

Hearing loss affects one’s ability to communicate, which can cause stress, fatigue, social isolation, and, in turn, depression. Along with depression, clients with untreated hearing loss are known to experience anxiety, relationship problems, low self-esteem, and other negative emotions. However, hearing aids have been found to help combat these issues. A study by the National Council on the Aging (NCOA) found that those with untreated hearing loss were more likely to report depression, anxiety, and paranoia, and they were less likely to participate in organized social activities compared to those who wear hearing aids.

Spinal Manipulative Therapy

Spinal manipulation is a treatment technique that involves a high velocity, low amplitude thrust, which is performed by the practitioner on a joint segment of the patient’s spine. The treatment is often accompanied by an audible ‘pop’, which is a change in pressure within the synovial joint. Manipulations can be very helpful in providing pain relief to a specific injury, but the effects are short-lived. The long-term rehab plan for your pain/injury should focus on active-based programming such as exercise. The combination of manual therapy followed by exercise provides more permanent results and better patient outcomes. Ask your practitioner if this is right for you!

Thank you, Live Life Alarms

My husband is in the early stages of Alzheimers. He continues to enjoy riding his bike and I used to get very worried as he would sometimes have difficulty finding his way home. Getting him a Live Life mobile alert was the best thing we have done as now I can readily find out quickly where he is. He recently went out cycling and was gone for some time so I called him on his alert pendant. Not only could I talk with him but the Mobile Alert sent me an automatic return text showing his exact location on Google Maps. This has given me so much confidence now and allows him to continue doing what he loves. ~ Vicki Ogston.

Which Sunscreen is Best?

When selecting a sunscreen, go for the “broad spectrum” protection. Sunscreens with this label protect against both UVA and UVB rays. Make sure your sunscreen has a sun protection factor of 30 or higher. The SPF number is the level of protection the sunscreen provides against harmful rays. Higher SPF numbers do mean more protection, but the higher you go, the smaller the difference becomes. Secondly, look at the ingredients. Physical blockers (titanium dioxide, zinc oxide) provide the best protection and cause less skin irritation than chemical sunscreens.

Vision Problems or Learning Difficulties?

When your child struggles with schoolwork, despite all best efforts to help, it can be very difficult to figure out what is needed. When an eye coordination or eye tracking problem is at the root of a child’s struggles with learning, the signs are very easy to see – when you know what to look for. Unfortunately, these signs can easily be mistaken for learning difficulties or attention problems. One of the signs that a vision problem may be contributing to learning challenges is a short attention span when it comes to reading and near work. This behavior could easily be mistaken for ADHD and/or Dyslexia. A developmental vision evaluation could open the door to your child’s success.

What is a Hearing Evaluation Like?

To start, you will meet with a Hearing Care professional and a thorough history will be taken. An inspection of your ears will take place to confirm good ear health. You will be asked to respond to tones in a sound treated room. The tones tested are specific and range from the low to high frequencies that are important for hearing speech. You will undergo word testing to measure your communication abilities and how you hear speech in quiet and in noisy situations. Results are recorded to guide the Hearing Care Professional in forming a treatment plan if hearing loss is present.

It’s Your Turn to Quit Smoking

Laser Therapy is an accu-pressure point therapy similar to acupuncture but without the dreaded needles. It is a modernized natural approach to help heal the body without the use of drugs. The entire procedure is external, and the laser treatment conducts low energy to accu-pressure points to your ears, face, hands, arm, legs, and feet. The first hurdle in quitting smoking is to get through the nicotine withdrawal phase, which people often dread. The laser treatments significantly reduce cravings and withdrawal symptoms, so people generally sail through this phase with greater ease and break their nicotine addiction.
