When dealing with shoulder impingement, avoid resisted shoulder exercises with a pronated grip (palms facing down), as the tendons will be pinched in this position. The weakened rotator cuff is unable to maintain adequate space between the bones in the shoulder, causing the tendons to rub, which will aggravate symptoms. Exercises should be done in pain-free range of motion with proper form. It is more important to restore movement and increase endurance by doing higher repetitions than overloading with heavy weight. Make sure to emphasize deep breathing and take a 45 to 60-second break in between sets.
How to Boost Your Metabolism
Are you looking to kick-start your metabolism? Here are a few tips! 1. Build muscle. Your body always burns calories, even when you’re doing nothing. Your resting metabolic rate is much higher if you have muscle. 2. Keep drinking water. Your body needs water to process calories. If you are even mildly dehydrated, your metabolism may slow down. 3. Power up with protein. Your body burns many more calories digesting protein than it does with carbohydrates. As part of a balanced diet, replacing some carbs with lean, protein-rich foods can boost metabolism at mealtime.

Why Can’t I Put Down My Phone?
Detaching yourself from your phone and truly unplugging can seriously improve your life. While there’s no doubt technology has made our lives easier in many ways (remember roadmaps?), research suggests that our addiction to it is real. Every new notification triggers the release of dopamine, a neurotransmitter that drives us to seek rewards, so you keep coming back for more. This vicious cycle is taking a toll on our health, mental wellbeing, and relationships. But this habit isn’t entirely your fault. Instagram, Facebook, Twitter—they’ve all been designed to make you repeatedly use them and check back in. Time for a digital detox?
What is Geriatric Mental Health?
The well-being of older adults is a major social and health concern in Canada. Geriatric mental health (GMH) refers to the multidisciplinary practice in the assessment and treatment of mental illness or impairment of older adults, from the bio-psycho-social perspective. Older adults often receive inadequate or inappropriate mental health services. Provision of appropriate and effective care is a challenge because of the complexity of determining the differential diagnosis of health problems in elders. A GMH team consists of health professionals such as geriatric psychiatrists, clinical nurse specialists, psychiatric nurses, occupational therapists, and social workers.

Hearing Loss and Depression
Research continues to prove a strong connection between hearing loss and depression. The two are referred to as invisible conditions, as you cannot see their effects at first glance. Because of this, their effects can often go unacknowledged, unrecognized, and untreated. Hearing loss affects one’s ability to communicate, which can cause stress, fatigue, social isolation, and, in turn, depression. Along with depression, clients with untreated hearing loss are known to experience anxiety, relationship problems, low self-esteem, stress, and other negative emotions. However, hearing aids have been found to help combat these issues.
