Volunteers Needed!

Here at Saskatoon Services for Seniors we strive to make a difference every day. We do this by helping seniors to remain in their own homes safely for as long as possible. The Spring season ushers in our very popular Yard Work and Gardening programs. We encourage anyone with a heart of gold who likes working outdoors to volunteer so that seniors in our community can keep their yards and gardens looking beautiful now that winter has finally receded. If you or someone you know would be interested in helping seniors in our community, please contact our office today. All help is greatly appreciated.

Housekeeping Services

Saskatoon Services for Seniors offers housekeeping services for all seniors in Saskatoon. Our staff is screened and fully insured. We are here to assist with many household cleaning services such as kitchens, bathrooms, laundry, dusting, and wall washing. We only provide the services that you require and as such only have a one hour minimum for each appointment. We can provide weekly service, bi-weekly services or just when you need us. The fee involved is based on the senior’s income to keep costs manageable for low-income households. Call us to check availability.

Lawn Cutting Now Operational

Winter kept coming back this year. But it seems somebody finally got Jack Frost some NyQuil and we can resume cutting your lawns. We’re very happy to be able to provide this service for you. We offer Weekly and Bi-Weekly, or Call-In services for those who only need it occasionally. We can send out a sign-up form in regular mail or e-mail. You can even pick one up from our office and either fill it out here or get it to us later. A huge thanks for the donations and volunteers which allowed us to start quicker.

One Change at a Time

Fitness is a life long journey. It can’t be earned in one workout, gained by eating well for one week, or through one eight hour sleep. The long-term benefits only come to those who stick with the plan, adapt as life changes, and most importantly enjoy the ride. We call this building healthy habits. Imagine if you ate one apple a day and did 20-30 minutes of varied physical activity 3 days per week. Over one year that would be 365 apples and 78 hours of physical activity accumulated through your habits. Focus on making only one change every 2-4 weeks and watch your life change.

Runner’s Knee?

“Runner’s knee” is commonly used to describe two types of injuries of the knee, iliotibial band syndrome and patellofemoral pain syndrome. Both fall into the category of overuse or repetitive strain type injuries. They can occur in isolation or in combination, but both have been shown to be related to poor running mechanics and improper training volumes. What’s the solution? First step is a proper diagnosis by your healthcare practitioner. This should be followed by strength and mobility exercises to improve biomechanics, adjustment of training volumes as needed, and possibly gait analysis and footwear adjustments if it is deemed necessary.

Preventing Noise Induced Hearing Loss

Noise induced hearing loss is a common form of hearing loss that can be prevented with the right precautions. Loud noises from traffic, construction sites, music concerts, and even everyday activities such as listening to music and watching TV can contribute to hearing loss. To protect your hearing, wearing the right type of earplug or earmuffs for your needs is crucial. Additionally, consider custom-molded ear protection specific to the environment, such as shooting/hunting, live music, motorsports, etc. Lowering the volume through headphones or earphones and taking breaks in quieter environments can also help prevent noise-induced hearing loss. By taking these simple steps, you can preserve your hearing and maintain your quality of life.

The ABC’s of Caring for Aging Loved Ones

It’s important to act promptly when changes in aging conditions arise, whether it’s a shift in attitude, behavior, or cognition. Prioritize your loved one’s comfort, safety, and overall wellbeing by exploring care options with family and trusted advisors. In-home care offers a personalized approach and provides support to family caregivers. Care professionals assist with daily tasks such as personal care, meal preparation, and light housekeeping, while also providing companionship and socialization. Proactive care can enhance quality of life, prevent unnecessary decline, and enable individuals to remain in their own home while receiving necessary support. Consider the advantages of in-home care and choose a provider that aligns with your family’s needs and values.

Brain Injury Awareness Month

Concussions and traumatic brain injuries can change someone’s life forever. If you suffer from a head injury, you should see a chiropractor or physiotherapist/athletic therapist right away. Naturopathic doctors can also play an important role by: 1. Decreasing inflammation in the brain by decreasing inflammation in the gut through diet and lifestyle modifications. 2. Recommending specific supplements to support inflammation, cognitive function, hormones, etc. 3. Providing IV therapy, which can allow high doses of nutrients to reach the bloodstream directly. 4. Offering low-level laser therapy, which stimulates energy production to decrease chronic inflammation and support healing.

Dentures and Dry Mouth

Dry mouth is a condition that involves the salivary glands not producing enough saliva to adequately keep the mouth moistened. This lack of saliva can alter the fit and comfort of dentures, since saliva helps dentures retain their suction and stay in place and also has a lubricating effect that keeps dentures from rubbing on the gums and creating sores. Those who take certain medications, are older, use tobacco and alcohol, or snore while they sleep, are more susceptible to dry mouth. If you’re experiencing dry mouth symptoms as a denture-wearer, contact your denturist to discuss your options.
