Volunteers

We are continually seeking volunteers to assist seniors and individuals with disabilities in our community. If you have a passion for giving back and can spare a few hours, please consider reaching our office to inquire about volunteering opportunities. We offer a diverse range of programs, including housekeeping, gardening, snow removal, grocery shopping, handyman services, and yard work. If you are interested in contributing to any of these initiatives, we invite you to contact us for more information. Your support can make a significant difference in the lives of those we serve.

Help Support Seniors in Our Community Today!

Now, more than ever, your support is crucial in advancing our mission to maintain and enhance the independence of seniors in our community. The generosity of our donors helps us provide essential services and programs, ensuring that seniors and individuals with disabilities receive the assistance they need. Your contributions directly fund programs like our free tax assistance service, and they help cover costs for low-income seniors, enabling them to access vital resources and support. Every dollar you donate stays right here in Saskatoon, making a tangible difference in the lives of those who need it most. By giving today, you are making a meaningful impact on the lives of our seniors, ensuring they continue to live with dignity, independence, and the support they deserve. For more information on how to contribute, please contact our office at 306-668-2762. Thank you for your generosity and for helping us create a brighter future for our community’s seniors.

Season’s Greetings from SSFS!

As the year comes to a close, we at Saskatoon Service for Seniors would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to our clients, volunteers, and generous donors. Your unwavering support has made it possible for us to deliver essential services to those in need throughout the year. We are incredibly fortunate to have a team of dedicated volunteers who help us continue our mission of supporting seniors in our community. Their selfless contributions are at the heart of everything we do. During this holiday season we send our warmest wishes for joy, peace, and fulfillment to all. Thank you for being part of our extended family, and for helping us make a difference in the lives of so many.

Holiday Compassion and Comfort

During this season of reflection and remembrance, we extend our heartfelt condolences and warm wishes to those who have experienced loss. We understand that the holiday season can be particularly challenging for those grieving the absence of loved ones. May the spirit of love and cherished memories bring comfort to your hearts. Our commitment to guiding you through this journey remains unwavering. Wishing you strength, peace, and moments of serenity during this holiday season from all of us.

Shopping Delivery Program

Navigating the cold and snowy weather can pose challenges for shopping outings. For the convenience of our members, we offer a service where you can simply phone or email us with a detailed shopping list, and we will handle the rest. Our team will go to the store to shop on your behalf and then deliver the groceries directly to your home. Whether you need this service frequently or just one time you can place orders as needed. Order requests are accepted on Mondays and Tuesdays, with deliveries scheduled throughout the remainder of the week. Given the limited availability of spots each week (highlighting the significance of our dedicated volunteers), we encourage you to reach out for more information or to place your order. Your comfort and well-being are our top priorities.

Tips for a Healthy Prostate

Prostate cancer can have very similar symptoms to benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH), caused by an enlarged prostate, or sometimes none at all. Signs to look for are urinary symptoms (frequency, urgency), fatigue, back pain or blood in the urine/semen. What can you do to maintain prostate health? Get quality sleep; stick to a diet rich in vegetables/phytonutrients, good fats, lean protein; and exercise! Supplementation (herbal and nutrient combinations) is very beneficial and a non-invasive treatment for BPH. Naturopathic medicine can provide additional support for prostate cancer. This can include decreasing side effects from conventional treatment and supplementation (oral and IV).

Understanding EchoLight REMS Technology

EchoLight REMS (Radiofrequency Echographic Multi-Spectrometry) offers a breakthrough in bone health assessment, particularly for osteoporosis. Unlike traditional DEXA scans, REMS is non-invasive, radiation-free, and provides highly accurate results. It’s especially beneficial for individuals in their 30s and 40s, when bone density may begin to decline. Factors like genetics, poor nutrition, and lack of exercise can further weaken bones. Regular bone health monitoring with tools like REMS can help ensure early detection and proactive management, promoting healthier bones and reducing the risk of fractures. Lightening the Load

Aging happens to everyone – no matter how young at heart. What’s reassuring is that we can take proactive steps to age well, stay active, and live independently for as long as possible. But when should you start thinking about home care? If you’ve noticed signs that a senior needs help at home, it’s likely time to start the conversation. These services are designed not just for medical needs, but also to lighten the workload around the home, ensuring that daily tasks are manageable and stress-free. Early intervention with home care can help maintain a higher quality of life, enabling seniors to continue enjoying the activities they love in the comfort of their own homes.
