Do you like cleaning up? Do you know somebody else who does? We’re looking to hire Housekeepers so you can do what you love and be paid for it. Saskatoon Services for Seniors is looking for kind souls with good work ethic to go to seniors’ homes and do laundry, cleaning, and other related tasks. You won’t need to do any nursing-related tasks so it’s no medical or personal care knowledge is needed. Please inquire if interested.
Shopping Delivery Program
Let us shop on your behalf! Our members can phone or e-mail us with a detailed shopping list and we will go to the store for you and then deliver the groceries to your home. You can order as often or as little as you need. Some people only order once to get that item from a store that’s too far from home or if the weather is terrible and they do not want to venture out. We do have weekly limits to the spots available (another reason why our volunteers are so important) so please contact us for more information.
Looking for Snow Equipment!
We are looking for donations of equipment for our winter services. From shovels to ice breakers and even snowblowers we would appreciate any functional equipment donation. As winter closes in we’re trying to get the equipment and staff to serve our clients.
We’re Hiring & Accepting Volunteers for the Winter
Winter is coming and we won’t be caught unprepared! That’s why Services for Seniors is hiring able-bodied people to help clear driveways, sidewalks and walkways for seniors this winter. Still want to help but don’t have time for a job? We’re also accepting volunteers too! Being snowed in is inconvenient for the able-bodied but it’s downright terrifying for a senior. Contact us and see what openings we have.
Help Support Seniors in Our Community Today!
Today more than ever your support is extremely valuable. It helps progress our services while playing a vital role in keeping seniors independent. Our generous supporters help to supplement the cost to low-income seniors in the community, as well as fund programs that are free to any senior like our tax program. Every dollar of support stays right here in Saskatoon. We have many lower income seniors that need our services, and the generosity of your support allows us to be able to assist them. Please see our contact info at the end of this article to help our seniors today!
Mindfulness and Physiotherapy
What do mindfulness and physiotherapy have in common? First, what is mindfulness? Mindfulness is the awareness of our thoughts, feelings and movements throughout the day. Mindfulness teaches the art of letting our thoughts happen without judging them as positive or negative. Physiotherapy often deals with patients who are in pain which can be a combination of physical and mental factors. Stress is one of the mental factors that can negatively impact our nervous system by activating it and causing more pain. With our physiotherapy sessions we try to address the physical sources of pain but practicing mindfulness lets patients address the mental factors as well.
Benefits of Independent Living
Independent senior living, bridging the gap between aging in place and assisted living, is a retirement haven for seniors who want flexibility and peace of mind. Independent living communities have blossomed, allowing creative cuisine, independent schedules, private parking, and flexible service programs. Say goodbye to the hassle of utility bills, dishes, vacuuming, or grocery shopping. Independent living communities have in-house maintenance workers, housekeeping, and landscapers to take care of it all for you. Time to start enjoying retirement and living the good life! If you are an active senior looking to get the most out of your retirement, we encourage you to learn more about independent living.
Staying Social with Hearing Loss
For someone with hearing loss, social situations are challenging. Help improve communication with them by following these simple tips: • Gain their attention before you begin talking. • Speak naturally & don’t shout. Speak distinctly, at a normal rate, using pauses to give the person time to process speech. • Keep your hands away from your face while talking. • Avoid sudden changes of topic. And if the subject is changed, tell them what you are talking about now. • Seat them where they can see as many faces as possible. • Check in. If you think your listener may not be following, convey the information again in shorter, clearer sentences.
Domestic Violence and Your Health
Domestic violence, also known as Intimate Partner Violence or IPV, is often thought about as a women’s issue. However, rates of IPV among men are steadily increasing, as men are beginning to recognize the signs of IPV and break the cycle of abuse. National Domestic Violence Awareness is recognized in the month of November–the month that also recognizes men’s health–and it is no coincidence that those who suffer from IPV also experience poorer physical and mental health outcomes. Regardless of your gender identity, IPV is a serious concern, and you are worthy of help, love and support.

Thermography and Breast Health
October is breast cancer awareness month, and preventative health care and early detection are important factors when it comes to breast health. DITI (Digital Thermal Imaging) or Thermography is a non-invasive assessment tool using an infrared camera. This helps to visualize inflammation and dysfunction in the body to assess problems in the vascular, muscular, neural, and skeletal systems. For breast health, DITI can help create a baseline of healthy breast activity, and yearly DITI follow-ups can help detect potential physiological changes and abnormalities. Since DITI looks for changes in physiology, it can be a great secondary measure alongside mammography.
