Disability Tax Credit Eligibility

If you have COPD, neuropathy, or joint arthritis impacting your mobility with pain, exhaustion, or shortness of breath, you may qualify for retroactive disability tax credit payments. This credit helps individuals with differing abilities receive financial compensation for a previous period of eligibility. You may qualify if you are restricted in walking all or substantially all the time and take approximately 3 times longer to walk 100 metres. If you have experienced fatigue, pain, shortness of breath, lack of coordination, and balance issues while walking, then call us for more information. We can get the eligibility process started for you.

Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) Awareness Month

August is Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) Awareness Month, a time to focus on this genetic disorder affecting motor function. SMA causes progressive muscle weakness and can impact mobility and respiratory function. Early diagnosis and intervention are crucial. Physiotherapy plays a vital role in managing SMA, helping to maintain muscle strength, flexibility, and overall function. Regular physical therapy can improve quality of life and slow disease progression. If you or a loved one is affected by SMA, consult with our specialized physiotherapists for a tailored exercise program. Let’s raise awareness and support those living with SMA this month.

Healthy Habits for Aging Well

Here are some key habits that we can adopt to keep body and mind in top condition. Regular exercise can help prevent chronic disease as well as improve overall health and well-being. A balanced diet. Focus on eating plenty of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean protein, and healthy fats. Stay hydrated. Aim to drink at least eight glasses of water per day and more if physically active or outside in hot weather. Get plenty of sleep. No explanation needed! For aging adults who are becoming isolated or less active, in-home care could help keep up with activities of daily living and maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Hearing Loss? Seek Help Now!

Sudden Hearing Loss (SHL) is a condition where hearing loss occurs suddenly or within a few days, often affecting only one ear. Annually, about one in 5,000 adults experience SHL, though the actual number may be higher due to unreported cases. Known medically as sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSHL), this condition is often idiopathic, meaning its cause is usually unknown. SHL is a medical emergency. If you or a loved one experiences sudden hearing loss, seek medical attention immediately. Early treatment improves the chances of recovery. Don’t delay; consult a healthcare provider for a thorough evaluation and timely intervention.

Interment & Cremation

There are many options when choosing a final resting place for cremated remains. At a cemetery, you may choose an above ground niche or in ground burial. Some, express a wish to scatter cremated remains or take the urn home. Have you considered that these latter options, could affect your family in the years and generations ahead? What will happen to the urn at home in 20+ years? There is peace of mind in a final resting place that is permanent, secure and sacred, that allows you to honour a life and have a place that family & friends can come to gather, visit, and grieve- honouring family heritage for years to come.

Weight Loss & Dentures

It may come as a surprise to you, but when you lose weight, your clothes are not the only thing that you’ll notice become loose! Your weight loss can affect the fit and suction of your dentures, causing them to be uncomfortable. Weight loss causes changes to your entire body, including your mouth and gums. However, there is a solution: your Denturist can perform a simple procedure called a reline. A reline will “tighten up” your dentures so they fit well, create good suction, and feel comfortable again.

Proud to Offer Local Services to Seniors

Saskatoon Services for Seniors is proud of our ability to offer many types of home support services that may be needed from time to time. We provide trained and reliable employees and volunteers – who visit clients to perform an agreed upon service, such as:

Gardening – We are delighted to have some talented gardeners ready to beautify your yard! With their skills in planting, weeding, pruning, watering and more, it’s clear they’re passionate about making outdoor spaces look their best. If anyone needs a helping hand in their yard this summer, they’d be in good hands with our gardeners. Please give us a call to make arrangements.

Housekeeping Services – Saskatoon Services for Seniors offers housekeeping services for all seniors in Saskatoon. Our staff is screened and fully insured. We are here to assist with many household cleaning services such as kitchens, bathrooms, laundry, dusting and wall washing. We only provide the services that you require and as such only have a one hour minimum for each appointment. We can provide weekly service, bi-weekly services or just when you need us. The fee involved is based on the senior’s income to keep costs manageable for low-income households. Call us to check availability.

Shopping Delivery Program – Regardless of age, we all need to eat. But those groceries can be heavy and the store can be busy and loud. Or you might not have time for it amidst all your other appointments and obligations. So let us shop on your behalf by joining our grocery program. Our members can phone or e-mail us Monday and provide us with a detailed shopping list and a store to go to. We will buy what you need and deliver it to you. We can even buy non-food items like yarn or cutlery. Maybe a gift for yourself or a loved one? And you’re not obligated to order every week. Some people even only order once to get that item from a store that’s too far from home. But slots are limited (another reason why our volunteers are so important) so contact us for more information.

Volunteers Needed! – Here at Saskatoon Services for Seniors we strive to make a difference every day. We do this by helping seniors to remain in their own homes safely for as long as possible. Our very popular Yard Work and Gardening programs are in full swing. We encourage anyone with a heart of gold who likes working outdoors to volunteer so that seniors in our community can keep their yards and gardens looking beautiful now that winter has finally receded. If you or someone you know would be interested in helping seniors in our community, please contact our office today. All help is greatly appreciated.

Hiring Housekeepers – Do you like cleaning up? Do you know somebody else who does? We’re looking to hire Housekeepers so you can do what you love and be paid for it. Saskatoon Services for Seniors is looking for kind souls with good work ethic to go to seniors’ homes and do laundry, cleaning, and other related tasks. You won’t need to do any nursing-related tasks so it’s no medical or personal care knowledge is needed. Please inquire if interested.
