Safe at Home

Have you or an older loved one ever had an accident at home? Did you make any repairs or improvements to prevent it from happening again? Did you change any behaviours or habits? Consider resources available through the Home Your Own WaySM program at HomeInstead.ca: What to consider if you stay in your home; home renovations for aging in place; safety hazards; technologies to help seniors stay at home; and Conversation starters for older adults and their children. The next family gathering could be a good time to talk together or call a reputable care provider to discuss options.

Understanding EchoLight REMS Technology

EchoLight REMS (Radiofrequency Echographic Multi-Spectrometry) offers a breakthrough in bone health assessment, particularly for osteoporosis. Unlike traditional DEXA scans, REMS is non-invasive, radiation-free, and provides highly accurate results. It’s especially beneficial for individuals in their 30s and 40s, when bone density may begin to decline. Factors like genetics, poor nutrition, and lack of exercise can further weaken bones. Regular bone health monitoring with tools like REMS can help ensure early detection and proactive management, promoting healthier bones and reducing the risk of fractures. Reducing Cognitive Decline

Hearing involves both your ears and the brain, so it’s no wonder that hearing loss can go hand in hand with thinking and memory problems. Studies are increasingly linking hearing loss to issues such as faster brain shrinkage, earlier onset of significant cognitive impairment, and up to a quintupled risk of dementia. However, addressing conditions such as hearing loss could help prevent a third of dementia cases worldwide, per a UK research collaborative. With hearing health and overall wellness so connected, seeking regular hearing checks and addressing listening difficulties early is important.

Fall Raking Tips

Colourful fall leaves are beautiful but cleaning them up can be a chore! These tips may help reduce injury while raking. Wear proper shoes with good grip to prevent slipping, as well as well-fitting gloves to avoid having to grip the rake too hard. Use proper yard tools and keep from over-reaching to help prevent strain on your back. Switching sides with the rake allows you to share the work between sides. Make sure to bend with your knees when picking up the leaves and bags. Breaks are also helpful, so take a rest when you need it. Happy raking!

ADHD and Women’s Mental Health

For many women, ADHD symptoms are frequently misdiagnosed as other mental health conditions. Yet, ADHD is now being recognized as a key factor in many mental health challenges—and vice versa. Could ADHD be a biological survival mechanism, designed to shield the mind from the intrusive, negative thoughts tied to depression and anxiety? Women face unique societal pressures, which can trigger harmful thought patterns, but ADHD might be acting as a protective force, minimizing these damaging thoughts. By confronting and reframing these challenges, you can take control of your mental well-being and reclaim your confidence.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month

In 2024, more than 360,000 people will be diagnosed with breast cancer. But there is hope. Advancements in early detection methods and support continue to increase the chances of survival. When caught in its earliest, localized stages, the 5-year survival rate of breast cancer is 99%. Early detection is the key factor for treatment of breast cancer. The earlier we act the better the chances. An annual screening mammogram is your best defense against breast cancer, please consult your health care professional for further information.

Meet your Practitioner: Susan Lee

Susan Lee began her BodyTalk training in 2006. Experiencing the positive impact of BodyTalk techniques on her own health, she pursued further education, completed exams, and worked through the necessary sessions to earn her certification as an IBA Advanced BodyTalk Practitioner. What Susan loves most about this wellness system is its unique approach—it doesn’t focus on identifying what’s wrong in the body, but rather on how things can be improved. BodyTalk works to enhance areas that need support by providing the body with the right information and directing it where it’s needed most. Contact Susan to learn more.
