Personal Reflections from our Executive Director

As I sit down to pen this article, I find myself reflecting on the multitude of experiences that have shaped my life as a Canadian elder. Born and raised in this vast and diverse land, I have witnessed the highs of prosperity to the lows of adversity. Allow me to share with you my thoughts and reflections on what it truly means to be Canadian.

First and foremost, being Canadian means embracing diversity. From the Indigenous peoples who have inhabited this land for millennia to the waves of immigrants who have made Canada their home, diversity is at the very core of who we are as a nation. As an older adult, I have had the privilege of witnessing Canada’s transformation into a multicultural society. I proudly experience diversity in Saskatoon Services for seniors’ workplace every day.

Of course, being Canadian also means weathering the storms together, both figuratively and literally. Throughout our history, time and time again, we have demonstrated resilience, unity, and compassion in the face of adversity. Whether it be rallying together to support those affected by wildfires or lending a helping hand to newcomers in need. For the past 36 years, SSFS volunteers and staff have provided services to older Canadians, stood side by side with the community to weather the ups and downs with resiliency, and we will continue to look out for each other in years to come.

As I enter a new phase of my life, I am filled with gratitude for the countless blessings that being Canadian has bestowed upon me. From the freedoms and opportunities afforded to me to the strong sense of community and belonging that I have always felt, I am proud to call Canada my home.

In closing, we at Saskatoon Services for Seniors, will continue to uphold the values of diversity, equality, and compassion that define us as Canadians for generations to come.

Empower Independence with Valuable Supports

As we celebrate self-care this month, consider the value of in-home care when individuals are no longer able to manage aging conditions and family caregivers realize the need for extra support. Personalized care provides one-on-one attention, ensures dignity, and fosters independence. In-home care allows individuals to remain in familiar surroundings, improving mental well-being and reducing stress. Investing in long term care at home isn’t just about addressing immediate needs, it is a commitment to honoring a loved one’s autonomy and quality of life for the long term. This month, make care for yourself and care for your family member a priority.

Hearing Aids & Summer

As temperatures rise, it’s important to understand how to take care of your hearing aids. Beware of Heat! Avoid putting your hearing aids in places that attract heat quickly – like the glove compartment or console in your car. Stay Away from Moisture! Remember to take your hearing aids out before swimming or if you’re caught in the rain. Keep ‘em Clean! Warm, humid weather creates a breeding ground for germs and bacteria. You can use a soft, damp cloth to wipe away dirt and debris from your hearing aids. Follow these simple tips and get outside to enjoy the warm weather.

Resolving Conflicts for Better Self-Care

Engaging in alternative dispute resolution not only helps resolve conflicts but also enhances self-care. This process allows individuals to express their perspectives, identify unmet needs, and understand the feelings driving their behaviors. Effective conflict resolution is built on strong boundaries and clear communication. By navigating mutual resolutions, you learn about others’ boundaries and your own, fostering emotional, psychological, social, and financial well-being. Social workers, experts in conflict resolution and self-care, can guide you in developing personalized plans. Your Mental, Spiritual & Emotional Health!

With such busy schedules, most people often don’t take enough time for themselves. Negative energy can affect us without our awareness, but if you find yourself more irritable this could be the reason. Journaling 5 positive things that happen each day helps to shift the mind away from the negative. Starting your day with deep breathing/prayer/yoga can help relieve stress and focus the body and mind for the day. Take social media and electronics break – which have been shown to have a negative effect on mood, sleep, and self-esteem. Instead, head outside, go for a walk, enjoy nature by yourself or call a friend to join you for a long overdue visit!

Wildfire Smoke Health Risks

Wildfire smoke, a blend of PM2.5 and gases like carbon monoxide, poses severe health risks in Western Canada. It obstructs oxygen intake, irritates the respiratory system, and triggers inflammation, manifesting in eye irritation, coughing, or headaches. While most symptoms are manageable, severe cases require medical attention, especially if experiencing breathlessness or chest pain. Smoke exposure heightens infection risks, including COVID-19 and ear infections in children. Minimizing exposure is crucial. HEPA air filters and sealed environments help indoors. While driving, maintain closed windows and recirculated air. During smoky periods, reduce exertion, exercise indoors, and stay hydrated. Prioritize health amidst wildfires.
