Music Therapy for Your Mental Health

Did you know that music can help improve your mental health? Music Therapists work with people with a variety of mental illnesses to help them feel supported, improve self esteem, promote relaxation, and relieve anxiety. They are trained to assess and create treatment plans according to the needs of each individual, but if you’d like to use music more purposefully at home – start by paying attention to how certain songs or types of music make you feel. How fast are you breathing? Did your heart rate increase? Are you clenching your jaw? It’s more than just whether you like it or not!

Holding Space for Yourself

Holding space is a conscious act of being in the moment, allowing yourself and others to feel and process those feelings. Unsettled, uncertain, and fearful are valid emotions, and learning to sit with those feelings is challenging. We live in a society where fix it and move forward, stuff it down, or numb the pain are often initial reactions. It’s OK not to be OK. The practice of yoga allows you the opportunity to connect with the self. Learning to hold space for others and yourself is a huge part of CJYF Body Positive Fitness and our Yoga philosophy.

The Mammoth Book Sale

Turning Books into Scholarships! In 1965, CFUW Saskatoon held its first book sale. Over the years it has grown to the Mammoth Book Sale it is today. We rely on the generosity of fellow book lovers to donate the books for our sale. Hundreds of volunteer hours go into the receiving, sorting, and selling of donated books. Each year CFUW Saskatoon awards over $40,000.00 in scholarships and bursaries to students in Saskatoon. Most of the money comes from proceeds of the Book Sale.

Role of the Funeral Director

Funeral directors are caregivers and administrators, event planners, as well as listeners and supporters. They make the arrangements for transportation of the deceased, complete all necessary paperwork and implement the choices made for final disposition and memorial service. It is important for your family to know your choice whether cremation, traditional, or green burial. Have the conversation with family now to find out what arrangements may already be in place or to help put them in place for the future. Planning ahead can be as simple as a conversation to record your wishes. Your funeral director is there to listen at any time.

Talking About Hearing Loss

Onset hearing loss is usually gradual, so it can take a long time for people with hearing impairment to realize there is a problem. While starting a conversation with a loved one experiencing hearing loss may be difficult, it’s a key step towards a solution. Strategies for having productive conversations include: *Aim to have serious discussions early in the day, before navigating daily activities. *Ask helpful questions to create an open dialogue and make everyday communication easier. For examples: “Should we have this conversation in a quieter location?” *Focus on facts and specific symptoms and encourage them to get a professional evaluation.

Lower Your Sugar Intake

Excess sugar consumption is associated with adverse health effects, including obesity, heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and cancer. Here are some ways to lower your intake: 1) Stick with whole foods at breakfast and drink water or unsweetened coffee or tea. 2) Check food labels for added sugars like “high-fructose corn syrup,” “agave,” and “honey”. 3) Eat whole fruit for fibre, vitamins, and other nutrients. 4) Go for Greek yogurt with fruit, or a piece of dark chocolate for dessert. 5) Use natural sweeteners like Stevia and keep high-sugar, highly processed junk food out of the house to limit temptation.

Why Hire a Matchmaker?

In today’s fast-paced and impersonal times, the search for love can be a daunting task. We have been wisely conditioned to fear strangers yet when looking for love most people throw caution to the wind by meeting strangers online. Very little is known about these people and are often not who they pretend to be. An experienced Matchmaker hand picks screened and good potential matches for their clients. Their identification and intentions have been verified and they have successfully passed the screening process. They have hired a Matchmaker to find their partner and to simplify the search process in a safe and effective way. When looking for love it makes sense to leave it to the professionals!
