Archwood 55 Plus is meeting a need in the community, especially after the pandemic where the need to get seniors out of their homes for mental and physical stimulation has never been greater. However, we can’t do it without you. Please give generously and make a difference in the quality of life for our seniors. Your donation will go a long way to continue providing just the right programs and services and help people reconnect with the community in a safe way. Every $100 donated provides an hour of services to older adults

Fall Programming

Registration for classes and expired memberships starts Tuesday, September 6, 7 and 8th by appointment at Archwood Community Club. On-site activities like pickleball and billiards starts Monday September 12th. Exercise classes start the same week. Chair Yoga, Yoga Fit and Flow, Functional Fitness, Tai Chi, Line Dancing, Low Impact Cardio and Art class will be back. We have a couple of new exercise classes such as Chair Pilates, and ‘Let’s move, Let’s Dance.’ A fusion of Latin and international music and rhythms such as the Cha Cha Cha, Salsa, Merengue, Cumbia, Disco etc… will get you moving to a great beat. This is a great way to burn calories and improve coordination and balance.

Archwood 55 Plus is a community-based non-profit, charitable organization offering lunches, art and fitness classes, social activities, bus trips and other services to adults ages 55 and older living in the Winnipeg area. Our goal is to encourage graceful aging and empower older adults to lead healthy and active lives while socializing with their peers.

The Waiting Room Revolution Podcasters, Dr. Hsien Seow, and Dr. Samantha Winemaker. Canadian Virtual Hospice will host a multicultural panel sharing stories and wisdom about grief.

Bathrooms can be tricky areas to navigate when it comes to safety. Some handy products that can help with bathroom safety include: 1) Shower/bath chair – sitting while showering can help those with balance or strength issues. 2) Shower transfer bench – helps you sit and slide out of the bathtub. 3) Grab bar – helps you support yourself around the room. 4) Bathtub lift – to get in and out of the bathtub safely. 5) Walk-in tub or shower – easy to get in and out of. 6) Handheld showerhead – allows you to move the showerhead instead of yourself while showering.

Enriching the Life of Your Pet

Keeping your pet in good physical shape is an important part of their wellness, but it’s crucial to provide mental stimulation and enrichment for them as well. Depending on the breed and personality of your dog, a walk doesn’t always provide enough stimulation. Drop-in visits from a pet sitter give your dog the opportunity for an extra play session during the day. For high energy dogs, or those needing more socialization, daycare is a great option. Even if it’s not every day, it gives your dog something to look forward to during the week. There are also many cognitive enrichment toys and puzzles you can purchase for your dogs, cats and birds to keep their minds sharp.

Our bones play different vital roles in the body, providing structural support, protecting organs, and storing calcium. It’s important to build strong and healthy bones during adolescence, and imperative to take steps to protect bone health as adults and seniors. Eating certain foods high in calcium, vitamin D, protein, and magnesium can strengthen both your bones and muscles. Getting these necessary nutrients can help seniors improve their physical health and mobility. Some foods that are rich in these nutrients include low-fat dairy, fortified plant milk products, nuts, leafy greens, winter squash, fish, liver, egg yolks, whole grains, beans, and seeds.
