Natural Strategies for Heart Health in Men

Did you know that up to 80% of premature cardiovascular disease is preventable with a healthy lifestyle? Yet, heart disease continues to be the leading cause of death in men. Here are my top lifestyle recommendations to prevent heart disease: (1) eat a plant based diet including fruits, veggies, fiber, beans/lentils, nuts/seeds, and whole grains. Keep sugar to a minimum. Check out the heart healthy mediterranean diet (2) quit smoking (3) get up and move every 30 mins (4) limit your alcohol (5) learn to manage your stress with meditation or yoga (6) get regular health screens to check your blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar.

Decluttering and Creating Flow

Did you know that our physical environment can affect our mental state? A cluttered countertop or disorganized closet can make us feel uneasy or change our mood. Here are some ways to improve the organization of your home and create a proper flow, free of physical (and mental) barriers. 1) Declutter countertops in your kitchen and bathroom. 2) Keep hallways free from clutter. 3) Consider using round tables in your home. 4) Choose furniture that properly fits the room it’s in. 5) Use a similar colour palette throughout the house. 6) Let the light in by not blocking any windows. Q: When I look at myself on the computer during a Zoom meeting, I notice my glasses look very reflective even though they have an anti-reflective coating. How could I fix that? A: If your anti-reflective coating has a blue sheen, it can reflect the bright bluish light that is coming from your screen, or from other cold LED light sources around you. Reducing the screen or ambient illumination would help. Changing the colour of your screen (using dark or night mode, or using filtering covers) would help too. As a last resort, you could try anti-reflective lenses with some other sheen than blue.

The Sober Connection

Connection holds a remarkable power in our lives—especially in the relationships we nurture with ourselves, our community, and out in nature. Without connection, it’s easy to fall into the “half-life” I was stuck in, an existence haunted by ancestral pain and the constant playing out of old patterns.
Without connection, humans wither and decline. That’s why I created Solbrü elixirs. Solbrü is designed from the ground up to bolster connection, compassion, and self-healing. Embrace a healthier lifestyle, feel empowered—not disheartened. Set a positive example for yourself and others around you, I want you to feel loved—not shunned.

Suffering from Gum Disease?

Gum disease is an infection of the tissues that surround and support your teeth. It is a major cause of tooth loss in adults. Because gum disease is usually painless, you may not know you have it. Gum disease is caused by plaque, the sticky film of bacteria that is constantly forming on our teeth. Some warning signs that can signal a problem include gums that bleed easily; red, swollen, and tender gums; receding gumline; and persistent bad breath. See your dentist if you suspect you have gum disease because the sooner you treat it the better.

Acupuncture for Less Anxiety

Research has shown that acupuncture may specifically benefit symptoms of stress by deactivating the ‘analytical’ brain, which is responsible for anxiety and worry. Acupuncture can help the body relax in a variety of ways, including 1) prompting the parasympathetic nervous system to release signals for relaxation; 2) improving the heart rate variability, which helps the body cope with stress; 3) calming the hypothalamus, which releases neurochemicals when we are under stress; and 4) helping with the flow of endorphins, the body’s own “feel good” chemicals. Q: My sister-in-law said she had a stroke in her eye. Is this really a thing? A: Yes – if you can imagine a stroke as interrupted blood flow to the brain, the same problem can occur to the nerve tissue within the eye when an artery in the retina becomes blocked. This can result in some vision loss, but more importantly can be an indicator of other unhealthy arteries in the body.

Should I Stay or Should I Go?

According to a recent survey, 90% of North American homeowners between the ages of 55 and 75 would like to stay in their long-time home as they get older. And, not surprisingly, 66% of seniors believe their home is where they will be most comfortable, with 53% believing they will stay healthier in their own home. But living out that scenario and remaining in the driver’s seat calls for a plan of action – and an understanding of potential safety risks in the home. Home care makes it possible to remain home despite physical challenges. From respite care to 24-hour in-home care, services can be tailored to meet your needs.
