New Year’s Resolutions for Seniors

The new year is always a good time to consider some positive changes you’d like to make to set you on the path to a happier, healthier you! These New Year’s resolutions for older adults are a great place to start. 1) Give your brain a boost – keeping mentally fit can be done by joining clubs or even doing a crossword puzzle each day. 2) Eat more veggies – sticking to a healthier diet is important as we age. 3) Move more – sign up for exercise classes or work out with a friend. 4) Spend more time with loved ones!

Why Wear Compression Socks?

How much do you move during the day? If you spend a lot of time sitting, your calf muscles that usually help pump blood through your veins do very little. This can cause swelling and blood to pool in the lower legs. Standing all day can have the same effect. Walking is a great exercise to help the calf muscles do their job. Socks with compression squeeze your legs to move blood up your leg whether you are sitting or standing. Voxx Knee Highs offer gentle compression, are comfortable to wear and have HPT to help with pain, balance and stability.

Resolutions for 2022

With the start of the new year, we are all hoping that this one will be different than last year and the year before that. 2021 is now officially over and as we embark on 2022, it is time to move forward. Let’s work on making resolutions that will help us through. Focus on that all-important Self-care (and Community-care)! Find the things in life that are enjoyable (and able to do within the constrictions of the pandemic), and resolve to commit to them regularly. Be specific yet flexible, and most importantly, make them enjoyable (not just healthy)!

Support is Available

Post-holiday debt can pile up quickly and easily become overwhelming. The stress of overdue bills can temp us to use gambling as a quick fix to achieve financial relief. Gambling when we’re vulnerable can cost us everything, not only our money but our mental and physical health. There are lots of free and confidential supports and tools available. This includes Voluntary Self-Exclusions from casinos, gaming centers and BCLC’s PlayNow available 24/7 toll-free at 1-888-795-6111 or connects with us at VIGamingSupport.ca. There are also excellent credit counsellors, financial advisors, ministers, pastors, podcasts, and/or trusted friends. Support is a game-changer: Do it!

WorkBC Assistive Technology Services (change!))

“There are a million different ways that we can help somebody increase their capability at work,” says Nate Toevs, Marketing Manager for the WorkBC Assistive Technology Services program. Offered across BC, the program “helps people who have a barrier to their employment-related activities,” explains Nate. “The focus is on people with disabilities, but it’s also people who have an old injury or chronic pain, anything that prevents them from giving one hundred percent of themselves in the workplace.” The program provides funding for assistive technology, ergonomics, restorative supports including canes and crutches, hearing aids, vehicle modifications, and more.

Seniors and Family Financial Wellness

As of 2021, 22.8% of Canadians are 65 or older. It’s important to have conversations around Total Wealth Planning for your family. Considerations: *Talk about money openly with family, *Establish a family member as a point of contact to divert calls from scammers, *Regular finances review; involve the family in discussions with your advisor, * Discuss the creation of a Will and Power of Attorney while the senior is still of sound mind. If you want to learn how to help the senior in your life, contact us today.

The Perfect Lift Chair for You

There are countless makes and models of lift chairs, (aka power recliners). Here are tips to decide which one is right for you! *Chair Size. How much space do you have? Do you prefer a smaller chair or a larger one that envelops you in a big hug? *Material & Coverings. Leather-type material is easier to clean while plush materials can be more comfortable. *Padding. If you have a bad back or sit for long periods you may want more padding. *Single vs. Double Motor. Double motors offer extra lumbar support. Come into our store and try out the different models.

Preventing Digital Eye Strain

As we spend more and more time using computers and handheld devices, many of us are starting to notice that our eyes are suffering. Digital eyestrain includes headaches, blurred vision, irritation, excessive tearing or dry eyes. If you have even small, uncorrected nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism, presbyopia or eye-muscle alignments, it can affect how comfortably you can work on a computer screen or device. Regular eye exams will detect any vision problems and provide corrective measures. For every 20 minutes of working on your computer or staring into your handheld, take a break for 20 seconds and look at something at least 20 feet away.

Functional Training
